For short stories…

I wanted to pass along the below post, a review of a short story collection that is also an endorsement of the genre. Carolyn, the author of the post and blog, was in one of my classes when I was a teacher and is now a junior at Denison University in Ohio. She writes reviews of books she has read and I find them to be quite insightful.

I chose this post in particular to highlight because I am a huge fan of short stories. I agree with her when she says short stories are often overlooked when there are lots of great stories to be read and lots can be learned from reading them. A trend I’ve noticed is that lately, instead of labeling their collection “short stories,” authors are now calling them “essays.”

David Sedaris is my favorite essayist. I’ve read all of his books and suggest you try him out. Start with either Holidays on Ice or Me Talk Pretty One Day.

…We don’t read enough short fiction when there are so many incredible stories available.  For readers, short stories are the perfect length for finishing in one sitting which is something you can’t often do with novels…
